Garbage Disposal Tips

By Blair

Have you ever wondered about the smell coming from your garbage disposer?

Save and freeze your lemon/orange peels (any citrus fruit will work). Every couple of months take a handful of peels and throw them in the drain and run the cold water. While the blades are grinding you will notice a citrusy smell as the blades cut the peels.

How to clean your garbage disposer?

To keep your garbage disposal clean pour a little dish soap inside and let it run for a minute with cold water.

Run your garbage disposal regularly as this will help prevent rust and corrosion.

Grind hard materials (i.e. fish bones and egg shells). The scouring action created by these particles inside the grind chamber that cleans garbage disposal's walls.

Things not to do to maintain a healthy garbage disposer.

Don't turn off the motor or water until grinding is completed. Once grinding has completed, turn off garbage disposal while the water runs another 15 seconds.

Don't put starches in the disposer, they will turn into a thick paste and cause blades to stick.

Don't put expandable foods (like pasta & rice) into the disposer. When water is added to them they expand and cause jams and clogs.
